The Importance of Patience...

By Steve Clenor, BA, MSMS

They say "patience is a virtue".  Honestly, must be a virtue I was never born with because ever since I can remember, I've always been about action.  The waiting for change and things to get better has never been my style.  I'm more of a "what the hell is taking soo long, let's do this, yes or no" type of guy.  However, choosing to get involved in the music industry, be it in an independent level is teaching me that patience is a necessity.  Patience is described as, "the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset."  Speaking for fellow music industry hopefuls, all those key words apply to our everyday struggle.  I've decided to define patience in my own terms and live by that.  At this point, I define patience as the ablility to see and understand that "slow progress is still progress."

In other words, being that I'm aware of my impatience, it's provided me the chance to learn from it and figure out the circumstance that is simply not healthy or constructive for me, and that I have the power to change it. I would suggest to all of you music industry hopefuls (artists, producer, djs, engineers, managers, and label owners), find that out about yourself, and you can then think logically about the any issue and decide whether or not your impatience is a hindrance to your success.  This should help alleviate a lot of your troubles when stressing about the future, instead of focusing on the present.  All this lead to is just a higher level of anxiety, which leads to issues like self-doubt, not trusting people around you, thinking it's just you against the world, feelings of imminent failure, and giving up on your dream.  Instead, try to develop patience which will undoubtedly end in a change in your attitude about life, a clearer mind, body, and soul.

Let's be honest, if you consider the reality of life, anything really good takes time and dedication.  Simply put, if impatience leads to quitting on your dreams, goals, values and other important things in your life, maybe it's time to let it go and try something new.  This is a quote that's worth keeping in mind next time you become impatient and feel your time is not going to come, "With all my “hurry up” and haring around I may have seemed to the outside world to be go-getting and achieving great things that seem so valuable in our materialistic world, but because I was so busy rushing to the next big thing, I was actually missing out on my life."  If you relate to this at all, it probably has the same affect on you as it did me.  In essence, take the time to enjoy the journey, the grind, and hard work that it takes to reach your ultimate goals.  Most likely, those are the moments you'll have the fondest memories of.
