Patience and Believing in Yourself…
By Steve Clenor, BA, MSMS
Patience is defined as having the quality of being patient, as the bearing of provocation, annoyance, misfortune, or pain, without complaint, loss of temper, irritation, or the like. For the purpose of this blog, let's define it as the ability to not hurry success when patience is required. Not everyone possess the patience virtue. However, in this entertainment industry, it is a necessity to become good at it should you want to succeed. It is safe to say that when you're an up-and-coming artist, model, dj, manager, promoter, label owner, fashion designer, etc., there are no shortcuts. Whomever you are, unless you have an exuberant amount of money to just throw at the powers that be, you'll need to come up with a plan to get yourself seen and heard. There are no guarantees that the being seen and heard part will ever actually occur, but the most important aspects of those two things actually happening are patience and self-belief. These two life virtues in my opinion go hand-and-hand. One cannot exist without the other in my opinion. For one to make it down the narrow and long road to success, they must first believe in themselves and after coming with a plan to put that self-belief to the test, they must exhibit and practice a tremendous amount of patience.
Let's assume things went great for you last week after meeting up with someone you thought was a great connection, and someone whom can potentially open all the doors for you and lead you to where you want to be. You met with this individual, things went great, he/she told you how great you are and that you will be the next great one in your field of choice. After the meeting, he/she informed you that they had to go discuss things with the rest of their team from their brand, but as they can see, you're the next big thing. Now, let's say you've been chasing after your dreams for the last three years and feel like you've given it your all. You've worked hard, you've built your portfolio, shaken enough hands, put forth enough effort, and in your opinion, the meeting with that industry professional you had last week was a long-time coming and this is your moment. That's your mindset and you're expecting that call anytime now that can change your life. In this instance, what if that call never comes? What if you get the call, but it's not what you want to hear? What's next for you?
Realistically, this would be hard on anyone. It takes a special being to look past this level of disappointment and survive with your confidence unshattered. However, let's look at it from the perspective of you should never allow any one person to decide if all your hard work has been worth it. Disappointment is part of the industry you've decided to pursue, so know how to deal with it when it occurs. As far as what's next for you, get back to building your brand, working on your goals and dreams until the next very important person happen to notice you and set-up the next biggest meeting of your life. This is where the virtues of patience and self-belief come in. The point is, we all go through this, be it in life in general or seeking to be part of a very rare and special club. It is how you choose to accept failure that makes you a success. Are you that individual whom can go through this scenario and still come out with your head held high? It takes a lot to be able to process this experience while still have enough patience and sense of self-belief to get right back on the proverbial horse with the same mission and determination to reach your goals. When that time comes and you go through such a scenario, I hope you get through it even more determined to make your dream a reality.
